While many people welcomed the New Year with celebration, our Yogam Yoga community stepped into 2024 with something even more meaningful — a day of heartfelt service. On New Year’s Day, volunteers came together to prepare and distribute meals to homeless communities across Durban, turning a day that is often difficult for many into one filled with warmth, dignity, and human connection.
What unfolded was nothing short of extraordinary.
A Community Effort Rooted in Compassion
From early morning, the energy at 138 Klaarwater Road in Shallcross was alive with purpose. Volunteers chopped, stirred, cooked, packed, and prepared meals with love and intention. Every pot, every tray, every container represented someone’s generosity — those who donated money, those who gave their time, and those who simply showed up to help.
By midday, the team was ready to move into the next phase: distribution.
At 645 Umbilo Road, now home to many of Durban’s homeless residents, volunteers gathered once again — this time to serve, smile, and connect. From there, the team continued to two additional locations, ensuring that as many people as possible received a warm meal on a day that can feel especially lonely and heavy.
Three Locations, Hundreds of Smiles
The feeding was a huge success. Not just because of the number of meals served, but because of the joy it brought. Faces that are often marked by hardship lit up with gratitude. People who are frequently overlooked felt seen, acknowledged, and cared for.
For many, New Year’s Day is a reminder of struggle — of hunger, of isolation, of uncertainty. But this year, for those we reached, it became a moment of relief and connection. A reminder that kindness still exists, and that they matter.
Volunteers described the experience as humbling, emotional, and deeply fulfilling. The simple act of handing someone a meal became a powerful exchange of humanity.
A Special Thank You
This outreach would not have been possible without the incredible dedication of Yogan, whose organisation, planning, and leadership brought the entire initiative to life. From coordinating the food preparation to arranging transportation and distribution, his commitment ensured that everything ran smoothly.
To everyone who contributed — whether through donations, cooking, packing, transporting, or serving — thank you. Your generosity transformed an ordinary day into something sacred.
Service as a Way of Beginning the Year
Starting the year with seva — selfless service — set a tone of compassion and unity for the months ahead. It reminded us that community is built not only through shared celebrations, but through shared responsibility.
This outreach was more than a feeding. It was a reminder of our shared humanity. It was a moment of connection in a world that often feels divided. It was love in action.
