The beginning of a new school year should be filled with excitement, confidence, and possibility. But for many children, especially those from under‑resourced communities, something as simple as a pair of school shoes can become a barrier to that sense of belonging. This year, our Yogam Yoga family stepped forward with compassion and unity to change that story.
Through the generosity of our members — and a wonderfully timed Spar promotion — we collected over 70 pairs of brand‑new school shoes for children at Oceanview Primary and St Martin’s Children’s Home. Every pair represented dignity, comfort, and the chance for a child to walk into the new year with pride.
A Community That Shows Up
The appeal began with a simple request: help us ensure that every child at these two institutions starts the year with shoes on their feet. What followed was an outpouring of kindness.
Members took advantage of Spar’s special offer — discounted school shoes with purchases over R300 — stretching every rand to make sure more children could be supported. In total:
- 32 pairs of shoes were purchased directly through donations
- The remaining pairs were contributed by members, bringing the total to over 70 pairs
- The total cost of purchased shoes came to R5,743.86
This was more than a collection drive. It was a collective act of love.
A Message of Gratitude From Oceanview Primary
When the shoes were delivered, the response from the school was deeply moving. The Principal of Oceanview Primary, Mrs. Moodley, shared this heartfelt message:
“Shoes were dropped off at Oceanview Primary School today by volunteers from Yogam Yoga. Thank you for your unwavering support. Our learners and staff are greatly appreciative of this opportunity.”
Her words reflect the gratitude felt across the school — not just for the shoes, but for the care behind them.

Walking Into the Year With Confidence
For many of these children, receiving a new pair of school shoes means:
- No longer feeling embarrassed or excluded
- Being able to walk to school comfortably
- Feeling equal to their peers
- Starting the year with confidence and pride
These are small things to some, but life‑changing for a child.
The joy on their faces reminded us why seva — selfless service — is at the heart of Yogam Yoga. It is not just about giving; it is about uplifting, empowering, and honouring the dignity of every human being.
A Beautiful Start to the Year
This School Shoe Appeal was a huge success because of you — the donors, the volunteers, the organisers, and every member who shared the intention to make a difference.
Your generosity ensured that children at Oceanview Primary and St Martin’s Children’s Home stepped into the new year with comfort, confidence, and hope.
This is what community looks like. This is what compassion feels like. This is Yogam Yoga in action.
