At Oceanview Primary School, learning doesn’t end when the bell rings. Twice a week — every Tuesday and Thursday — the school comes alive again in the afternoons as children gather for the Yogam Yoga Seva Network’s after‑school literacy classes. These sessions are designed to give learners the extra support they need to strengthen their reading and writing skills, and ultimately, to open doors to a brighter future.

But learning is almost impossible on an empty stomach. That’s why one of the most meaningful parts of this programme is the feeding initiative that accompanies every class.

Thanks to the generosity of our Yogam Yoga members and the beautiful partnership with Food for Life, 60 children — 30 juniors and 30 seniors — receive a warm, nourishing meal before they begin their lessons. This simple act of care makes all the difference.

Why Feeding Matters

In South Africa, literacy challenges are widespread, and many children struggle to keep up academically. Hunger only deepens this struggle. When a child is hungry, concentration fades, frustration rises, and learning becomes a battle.

By ensuring that every child in our literacy programme receives a meal, we are doing more than feeding their bodies — we are giving them the energy, focus, and emotional stability they need to learn.

A full stomach becomes the foundation for:

  • Better concentration
  • Improved behaviour
  • Greater confidence
  • A willingness to participate
  • A sense of safety and belonging

This is how real change begins.

A Partnership That Uplifts

This year, thanks to the Directors from Food for Life we have an extraordinary partner in this work. Week after week, Food for Life have prepared and delivered meals with kindness, reliability, and genuine care for the children. Their presence has been a blessing to the programme, and their compassion has touched every learner they have served.

Working with them has been a joy, and their contribution has strengthened the heart of this initiative.

Education as a Path Out of Poverty

The Yogam Yoga Seva Network believes deeply in the power of education to transform lives. Literacy is not just a school subject — it is the key to opportunity, employment, and independence. For many children in South Africa, improving literacy skills is one of the most powerful ways to break the cycle of poverty.

Through these after‑school classes, we are giving children:

  • Individual attention
  • A safe and supportive learning environment
  • Tools to build confidence
