At the start of this year, something truly special unfolded at Highlands Primary in Chatsworth. Thanks to the generosity of the Yogam Yoga Seva Network, the school hall — a space used daily by hundreds of children from the Welbedacht area — has been transformed into a welcoming, comfortable environment where learners can now experience the full magic of yoga.
What was once a cold, echoing floor is now a warm, carpeted sanctuary for movement, breath, and mindfulness.
A Hall Transformed Through Community Generosity
Our members came together with incredible heart, raising R12,000 to purchase and install over 100 square metres of carpet tiles, along with the glue and materials needed for the installation. This upgrade was not just about aesthetics — it was about dignity, safety, and creating a nurturing space where children can learn essential life skills.
Because of this collective effort, the hall now:
- Provides a soft, safe surface for yoga practice
- Creates a warm and inviting environment for learners
- Enhances the overall look and feel of the school
- Allows larger groups of children to participate comfortably
This is seva in action — practical, meaningful, and deeply transformative.
Yoga Classes Begin: A New Chapter for the Children
With the hall complete, classes have officially begun, led by our dedicated Yogam Yoga teacher, Allan Govender. His passion, humour, and gentle teaching style have already made a powerful impression on the learners.
The feedback from the school has been overwhelmingly positive.
From the Principal of Highlands Primary:
“Hi all. Yesterday was the first yoga lesson at school. According to the teachers it went extremely well. The kids really enjoyed it and are looking forward to next week. Allan did a fantastic job, even introducing some humour to keep everyone captivated. Thank you Allan and to everyone for making this possible. Looking forward to a bright 2026.”
These words reflect exactly why we do this work — to uplift, empower, and bring joy to children who deserve every opportunity to thrive.
Why This Matters
Yoga is more than movement. It teaches:
- Emotional regulation
- Focus and concentration
- Stress and anxiety management
- Conflict resolution
- Confidence and self‑awareness
By creating a dedicated space for yoga, we are giving children tools that will support them far beyond the classroom — tools for life.
Gratitude to Our Yogam Yoga Family
To every member who donated, supported, or helped make this project possible — thank you. Your generosity has created a lasting impact on the lives of hundreds of children.
You didn’t just buy carpet tiles. You created a sanctuary. You opened the door for healing, learning, and growth. You made it possible for Allan to share yoga with even more young hearts.
This is the power of community. This is the spirit of seva. This is Yogam Yoga.
